Molly Shannon is a British actress and singer, who has also been a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live since 1995 to date. She has gone on to feature in other successful films such as eating Pray Love, What Happens in Vegas, A Fish called Wanda, and The Perfect Score. Her credits also include appearing in several stage productions, including one of the most successful ever – Rent Iturus. Recently, however, Molly has been making a name for herself in the world of comedy, with a role as one of the central characters in the third installment of the hit Homefront series on BBC Scotland.
Molly is a thirty-two-year-old actress, whose comic timing is unsurpassed by any female of her age. Her wide range of roles in both theater and cinema further enliven her persona, as she is able to draw upon a host of personal experiences to produce brilliant comic performance. Born in Ohio, Molly grew up in a household where being a good sport was an important part of life.
In recent years, Molly has established a reputation for herself as an accomplished performer, having won several awards for her performances on stage and screen. Although a Saturday Night Live regular, she has also found success in film and television, playing different supporting roles in films such as Love Actually, Bigelow, and Bridesmaids. Her best-known TV roles have been on shows such as Absolutely Fabulous, Billions, and Frasier. On stage, she has been able to play lovable and beloved characters such as Miss Piggy, Cookie Monster, and The Fantastic Four. As a member of the cast of Sixty-Seven, she played the cynical, spunky Gwyneth Paltrow in the show, and was known for her often controversial opinions on religion and politics.
Molly’s most recognizable role may be that of Mary Katherine Gallacher on the hit Saturday Night Live. A thirty-something single mother, Mary is a fan of the show who parades around with her children, wearing outfits inspired by the characters on the show. While she is a loving and understanding mother, she can still be exasperating at times, always getting the same reactions from her children. Though the role may seem to be slightly outdated, as Mary is almost a decade older than the rest of the cast, she manages to stay relevant while still being memorable. Her age and demeanor might be a bit far removed from the television version, but it made her one of the most beloved stars of the show.

Molly was also one of the biggest surprises of the year, thanks to a string of successful theater releases that featured original talent. She co-starred with Evan Al Dempsey in the movie Finding Nemo, which went on to become one of the year’s biggest movies. The film itself was not the greatest movie, but it managed to be a warm and charming family film that ended up being widely panned by critics, even after the DVD release saw a massive amount of positive reception.
Finally, Molly returns for a second season on Sixty Minutes, playing the same recurring role as Corin Steadman. Unlike Corin in season one, however, Molly is not quite as friendly and laid back as she was when first introduced to the audience. She still loves her daughter but is clearly seeking a more serious relationship. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as The Thick of It features some great acting by the entire cast, but Molly’s character is occasionally too much of a presence in the show for me to consider her as the best female lead. Still, for all of the amazing performances that this cast provides, the real star of Sixty Minutes, John Ritter, is the stand out.
