She went on to play many characters in different media including stage, television and movies. Vanessa Marano was also married to fellow Broadway actress Susan Sarandon for 12 years. She currently resides in Los Angeles.
In her book, The Princess of Rock and Roll, Vanessa Marano reveals a few secrets about her life that people do not know about. She reveals that her real name is Vanessa Nicole Marano and that she was inspired by the true story of the rock star, Elvis Presley. She says she often would watch the early rock music videos with her family and look at how the musicians would act and speak. After listening to several albums by Presley, she decided she wanted to be a part of his world. She says she wrote to him about her dream of being an actress and he responded by letting her perform one night at a Las Vegas hotel, which resulted in her being discovered by the then young director, Gil Rockwell.
From this experience, she gained a new perspective on acting and decided to write a book about it called The Princess of Rock and Roll: My Life as a Spontaneous Female Actor. She says she wrote the book to help other women deal with their restless energy, which she says was often caused by her upbringing in foster care. After her first book, she decided to write a second one focusing on her time as a traveling singer/actor. She was so inspired by her experiences traveling the world that she decided to switch careers and focus on acting.
Vanessa Marano says she wrote the book to give other women the courage to be themselves and to feel comfortable with who they are. She says she felt like she had changed from the one-dimensional characters she had portrayed in her childhood to a more rounded female character in her later years. That’s when she decided to write a follow up book called The Princess of Rock and Roll: A Memorable Journey and followed it up with the TV show, Vanessa Marano: On Her Own. She voices several characters in both the books, including Elvis Presley’s first wife Priscilla; Gail Laguna as Serena Drummond, the mother of Presley’s child; as well as numerous others.
