Thora Birch was one of four actresses who appeared in a British film, Nude Scene in American Beauty (1999), which was directed by Mike Myers. Her role was that of porn star Patti LaBelle. She had previously appeared in several Canadian films, including Can’t Buy a Thrill (although she was only seen as a supporting player). She also appeared in the German-language remake of Beauty and the Beast, as well as in the Italian version of the same film. Thora Birch had a small role as a dancer in the second Italian film.
After American Beauty came the Japanese filming, which starred Ayana Danzazee. It was also directed by Mike Myers, who was well known for his comedy acting chops. Thora Birch once again made an appearance in a Japanese film, this time as a minor character in the Kyoto segment of the film. However, it was her role as the nymph in the third film that would garner her more notice.
Thora Birch next appeared in the independent film The Ghost World (2021), in which she played the role of a mute woman who lives with an ancient and powerful spirit. She was nominated for the award for best supporting actress in a science-fiction or fantasy film, and she later received additional nominations for the same category for the award of lifetime achievement. Later that year, she received another Academy Award for her work in The Phantom. In between these films, she also appeared in the movie adaptation of Ghost World. All of this earned Thora Birch the third Best Supporting Actress Oscar Award of her career.
