Maggie Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles, California, the youngest of five children. She grew up in foster homes. Her parents divorced when she was three, and her younger sister, Anna-Louise, was left with foster parents for several years. Maggie Gyllenhaal was raised by her grandparents, after her biological mother died when she was nine. The family had several members: her parents, their two other sisters, and their son, Frank.
Maggie Gyllenhaal studied acting at the University of Southern California, for four years. After graduation, she worked first as a secretary and then assistant director in the television department of Universal Studios, but she always longed to be a full-time actress. In 1986, at age twenty-two, Maggie Gyllenhaal landed a small role in a relatively unknown TV drama, “E.T.” which went on to become one of the year’s biggest hits.
