John Francis Bongiovi, also known as Jon Bon Jovi, is a former American rock singer, songwriter, and record producer. Born in Harlem, New York, he is well known as the singer, guitar player, vocalist, and lead guitarist of the popular 1980s rock band Bon Jovi. He has gone on to star in numerous other films and TV shows, as well as creating his own music. In this article, we will take a brief look at the life and career of Jon Bon Jovi.
Jon Bon Jovi was born in southern California. Bongiovi grew up in a musical household that also included his father, brother, and sister. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology at UCLA, he pursued a master’s degree in music marketing and promotion from the University of San Francisco. While studying, he worked briefly with famed recording artist and designer Lucille Costello, as well as with professional musician Larry Graham.
Jon Bon Jovi first gained notoriety as a performer while still in college. He was discovered by one of the managers of the iconic pop band, Aerosmith. Although Aerosmith was not particularly huge at the time, they had a hit single that summer called “Dream On.” Bon Jovi performed the song at many different shows, including an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. The following year, he appeared on New Year’s Day with Billy Ray Cyrus and asked the crowd if they would give him an autograph.
Bon Jovi is not the only artist who has used the name of “Bon Jovani” (his birth name) in his music. Other musicians have included artists such as: Motley Crew, Dave Matthews Band, Buffalo Springfield, Pat Boone and the Blue Rocks, Dream Theater, Nine Inch Nails, Green Day, Metallica, Amy Winehouse, and The Killers. The Killers first performed at the Grammies in Paris, France in their song, “Wake Your Mind Up.” The band’s singer, Bono, also used the name of “Bon Jovani” while promoting their record.

As the 2021 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame is pending, Jon Bon Jovi is just another example of how music gets made. Many artists fail to establish themselves as an overnight sensation, but Bon Jovi was able to do it in a relatively short period of time. As someone who was around for a relatively long time, he understands what it takes to get a song written and recorded. Not only that, but he had the financial resources to back up whatever effort he wanted to make.
Jon Bon Jovi did not get to be a pop star or a Hollywood recording artist overnight. He earned his first rock and roll hit in the opening verse of “Wanted Dead Or Alive” (as a guest vocalist with the Yardbirds), and his second album, Live Through This, featured his first hit, “Boom Clap.” From that point on, he was known mostly for his massive live shows, especially “Wanted Dead Or Alive,” which remains his most popular single and still enjoys high popularity in the United States. He would go on to sell millions of records worldwide, including a blockbuster reunion with The Beatles, “Convoy,” and “Words of Comfort.”
