According to biographer Jack Shea in his book The New Yorker, Haylynn Cohen was one of the last of the “Golds” to employ attorneys after the passing of Martin Luther King, Jr. She is currently represented by John Lewis of Atlanta, Georgia, who represented the late Dr. King for twenty-five years. Cohen has said that she felt deeply honored when she was asked to be a legal assistant for the late King in his last days. King loved her as much as she loved him. She worked with King in many of his final activities including negotiating the Historic Dry Creek Compilation Rights Act with Congress. She was also responsible for the preparation of letters advising peacekeepers to protect blacks in occupied areas. She was also a valued confidante to King when he was being hospitalized and even into his last days.
The biographer also writes that Cohen was a very good friend of Larry Aldrich, who was the former owner of the now infamous nightclub, nightclubs such as the Sunset Strip, Liquor store, the Fillmore, and others. When he died, Cohen paid for his own funeral. It is alleged that after her death, the nightclubs were sold and Aldrich became the main shareholder of the now-shuttered New York nightclub, nightclubs Daisy, and nightclub Icon. Haylynn Cohen’s net worth is calculated at approximately one and a half million dollars.
So we see in this biography that not only were Cohen a chief investor and nightclub operator, but she was also a friend and confidante of many major figures. She may not have been exactly what you would consider a “celebrities” yet by the standards of our society, she was certainly a big name. She had access to and enjoyed many high profile nightclubs and bars. The book talks about her many trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City along the way. If you are looking for a biography on a 35-year-old woman with an extensive knowledge of music and business, then you should really consider reading this book.
