Melissa Gilbert is an American actor, writer, television producer, political aide and former First lady of the United States. Her most notable works include “Seinfeld”, “Catch Me If You Can”, “When Harry Met Sally”, “Catch Me if You Can”, “The Princess Diaries” and “E.T.” She has also appeared in some movies, including “Water World” and “Man on the Moon” her career spanned parts of two decades.
Melissa was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and was a childhood friend of actors John Ritter and Christopher Reeve. She has always said that she wished she had been more famous than either of them. After getting a Master’s degree in English from the University of California at Los Angeles, Melissa moved to New York City where she was a fashion assistant to the well-known stylist, Joanna van der Wood, for five years.
After that she decided to pursue her acting career, and in the process of doing so became acquainted with both the art and business of producing television shows and movies. After working on several shows for NBC she decided to go into directing and writing, and these two interests would provide her with her next career break. She wrote and directed a number of successful feature films, which included “A Christmas Story”, “The Perfect Score” and “When Harry Met Sally”. She also produced a number of low budget films, including “Million Dollar Baby”. Melissa became one of the very first female executives in Hollywood, which is something that she has never found satisfying.
Melissa grew up in Southern California in a home that was full of Hollywood nostalgia for her biological parents. She attended the Beverly Hills High School of Music and pursued a music career in addition to her acting career. She began her film career in a moderately popular role as a cheerleader for the football team at her school. After graduating from the Los Angeles Technical High School of Theatre she moved on to other theater roles, such as appearing in “The Heartbreak Kid” as well “The Perfect Score” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”.
