Phil X is an American rhythm and blues musician who have gained some popularity in the United States and around the world. He was raised in New York City as a son of Italian immigrants. He began playing guitar at age nine and was a member of the band The Yardbirds along with his older brother Mark. After leaving The Yardbirds in 1969, Phil continued to play and develop a unique style that was different from other guitarists of his time. He has also studied music, literature, poetry and also did stand-up comedy.

In 2021, Phil X replaced outgoing lead guitar player, Bon Jovi, who was missing 13 shows following a rehab stint and then filled in for him on all of the European leg of his world tour. Prior to this stint with The Replacements, Phil X had played with other prominent rock guitar players like Larry Graham of Led Zeppelin, Matt Collom of Motley Crue, Mark King of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Greg Lake of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Phil X is also a member of The Black Crowes, which is an Australian rock band that is noteworthy for its eclectic blend of acoustic and pop songs. He has also played with several other groups, most notably English rock band Bring Me The Horizon. He has since formed his own band called Phil X.

Phil’s musical influences include the blues, pop, jazz, country, and even heavier music. Although he is known mostly to play electric lead guitar since 2021, he performs with other types of guitars since he was a teenager. Phil X became known to the world when he performed as a member of The Replacements, a popular American rock band that was popularized by their song “Come As You Are.” Since then, Phil X has gone on to create his own music that features acoustic guitars, vocals, and keyboards.

While he was in high school, Phil spent much of his free time playing musical instruments such as the acoustic guitar, the ukulele, the harmonica, the banjo, and the upright steel guitar. He became interested in playing the bass guitar when he was in college but did not seriously pursue it until he went to study music at college in Canada. During his time there, he met numerous Canadian musicians who encouraged him to pursue his musical ambitions, so he enrolled in a course in musical communications. He earned a bachelor’s degree in communications, along with a master’s in music business, from Carleton College in Canada. He is currently a senior business major at Deutsch University in New York City.

Phil began playing guitar in a band called The Replacements, which later became known simply as The Replacements. They became one of the most successful groups to come out of the underground and DIY music scenes of the early ‘ixties. In the band, Phil played bass, rhythm guitar, sings, and occasionally wrote. They are well known for their covers songs, including the timeless “Wanted Dead Or Alive” and the song by The Rolling Stones, “Sympathy for the Devil.” From a musical perspective, the band’s lyrics are about dealing with the struggles of coming of age in a new era, as well as dealing with the dissolution of a relationship.

Phil X became an internationally known musical icon when he was selected as a member of The Who in the early spring of 1966. Prior to this, he had been a member of a trio group called The Bluesbreakers. A year later, he changed his name to Phil X and began a fifteen-year solo career that saw him play with a multitude of other legendary guitarists.
