Jill Scott Measurements

Singer, poet, songwriter and actress Jill Scott exploded onto the national music scene in a trail of fire after the release of her self-titled double-LP debut album, Who is Jill Scott? Shortly thereafter, she was signed to Jannick Johnson’s imprint Kooltown Kings. After a string of singles including The Game, Scott was snapped up by outgoing R&B crooner Eric La Grande for what would become a blockbuster collaboration which catapulted Jill Scott to stardom dominance. Not to be outdone, Jill Scott then went on to sign with Bad Boy DJ Scott Storch and the soulful crooner Boz Scaggs. Jill Scott made a name for herself as one of the most versatile artists of her time, who also dabbled in writing and producing music. She has since been nominated for Academy Awards and has cemented her place as one of popular music’s great female voices.

Born inadelphia, Pennsylvania, singer/songwriter/comedian/ actress Jill Scott knows that music success can only come from the collective efforts of many. Her self-titled debut album proves that she was not content to operate just as a singer or a solo act but also that she has the ability to seamlessly mesh with various personalities and styles of musicians to produce an album that captures an eclectic mixture of sounds while remaining true to her own distinct style and voice. Her experience in both the worlds of music and theater has influenced her songs and themes to the point that listeners can tell which direction the song is heading – a wise move considering that many artists may attempt to follow too broad a path and risk being labeled as “off-center.” However, Jill Scott avoids such a mistake by maintaining the identity of her personality and musical influences while expanding on the arrangements and the subjects offered.

In this first disc, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” Scott does allow herself some space as she lets herself become a part of the songs instead of merely singing them. This personal space allows her to showcase her various talents and allow others to benefit from her unique vocal style. She sings with passion and clarity, but also with a hint of humor as she takes on one-man shows or a duo of lead vocals as she performs. Her mix of vocal styles is quite striking and if the blend of different vocal elements doesn’t work well, the audience will be left wanting more. Her voice will be undeniable throughout the track and the crowd will get into it with ease.

With “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” Jill Scott gets her own long walk. The album pays homage to the life of stand up comic Phil Hartman and his long walks across the stage with his distinctive style. The song is an excellent representation of how Phil impacted the lives of his fans, whether they were casual fans or dyed-in-the-wool fans who only listened to him because he was available. He is truly a legend and a beloved performer who influenced so many people in his pursuit of comedy.

While the title of the album is about a long walk, it doesn’t take that long to hear just what Jill Scott is able to do musically. The title sounds like an innuendo as she sings about the love of her life but the singer is strong enough to keep the song above the fray. The arrangement of the songs is quite diverse as the lead verse is backed by the middle verse and the backup verse finds itself at the end. The verses are accompanied by a light piano accompaniment to set the tone for what is sure to be a memorable debut album.

In many ways, this is a very positive response for the singer and her career. The studio album is a perfect showcase for the talents of Jill Scott and it also serves as a true reflection of what a real Jill Scott sound can sound like. The album is definitely not a throw away but it makes for a good listening experience and one that is sure to be highly appreciated by fans everywhere.
