Alanis Morissette

Alanis Morissette was a singer/songwriter who became famous during the era of the 1990s. She had a couple of hit singles early on but failed to gain consistent popularity with the mainstream. However, she did enjoy considerable mainstream success over the course of the next decade. She is today well-known for her music, as well as her movies and her writings.

Alanis Morissette was born to parents from France who migrated to Canada. Alanis was described as being very shy as a child, which led her family to seek out a secluded environment to raise her. They settled in New Orleans, and Alanis spent much of her early years in the city, learning to play the piano. In her late teens, she was discovered by Keyboardist, John Entwistle of The Who. He invited her to stay with him at his house while on a rehearsal tour, which she reluctantly accepted.

Following their breakup, Alanis moved to London to stay with her cousin, Mike. She tried to get a record deal in spite of the fact that her first few singles – “Reelin’ in the Years” and “Hits” – were not well received. Later albums, such as Alanis and John Entwistle’s “LP” (1982), “People Get Ready” (1983) and “Hits” (1985), helped make Alanis a popular name in the UK. She signed the contract withitol records, which issued her a second album with the same name.

When Canadian audiences heard her singing, they were captivated, and her unique voice soon won over fans throughout the country. A classic hit was “Boys Do Go To High School”, which went on to sell millions. Another hit was “We Can Run Away” from Alanis and John Entwistle’s 1984 album, which was later made available on video. Alanis became a popular face of Canadian music, along with her own music, as well as the musical group Sky.

When Alanis moved back to the United States, she did not allow her Canadian citizenship to prevent her from performing. She appeared frequently on television shows, including an appearance on “Fired” where she was interviewed by Steve Martin. This appearance made her even more popular in the United States, where she became known as “We Can Run Away” singer. Her first album in Canada, entitled “Alanis and John”, did not receive a lot of notice in the United States but was very successful in Canada.

With her smash hit “oplexy” (a variation of the title) and several other songs that climbed to #2 in the United States, Alanis Morissette was finally able to make her debut album in Canada. It was very successful, selling over one million copies in its first week of release. This was despite the fact that Canadian records were not popular in the States, where the band was thought to be “too much”. The success of Alanis Morissette’s first Canadian album makes it obvious that female rock stars from this country have the potential to be successful worldwide, regardless of their gender.
