Avril Lavigne was born in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. A childhood friend of Lavigne’s named Shelia assisted her in getting her start. In her early years, Avril Lavigne worked as a secretary in a printing company. After quitting that job, she decided to pursue her musical career in the eighties, when she formed the band The Fraytones with her brother John. They went on to form several other hit songs including “Mystery Train,” “Diva,” “Cocaine” and “When You’re Gone.”
In the mid-nineties, she was a contestant on Canada’s Next Top Model, which launched her career. She then moved on to become a member of The Nasty Little Party, before breaking into the Hollywood scene in the late eighties. She appeared in a number of movies, including eventual hit Mel Gibson’s “The Goodbye Girl.” Avril Lavigne was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1997 for her role as Selina Kyle (also known as Carrie) in the film “A Dangerous Woman.” Her best-known album is the much-beloved Avril Lavigne: The Years of Love, which topped the charts in the U.K. and remains a favorite among her fans.
Avril Lavigne’s life and music have been covered extensively in many different publications, including her own book, plus various books and music DVDs. She has also gained a lot of attention over the years for her charity work, most notably raising money for HIV/AIDS charities. Her most popular song “Boy meets girl” from her album was actually about her own battle with the disease. Following her death, her music will be played at the funerals of her own fans.
Avril Lavigne’s music career began in Canada, but she spent much of her early years in the United States. She was only in the country for a few years, but managed to make a number of Canadian hits. One of those singles – “Proud” from her album What the Noise! – went to number one in the U.S. After her U.S. career ended, she decided to sign with Atlantic Records, which was then the largest record label in the country. With the support of such big names as producer Avril Lavigne, Atlantic Records knew that this new young woman had a bright future ahead of her.

Avril Lavigne’s first major contract was with the band Weezer. The band’s lead singer was Jennifer Lopez, who at the time was very popular but had yet to establish a name for herself in the music industry. When Avril Lavigne saw Jennifer Lopez, it was likely that she decided she wanted to be like her. So, when Weezer gave her the chance to record her own music, her instinct might have been to sign with this company since she was already familiar with their sound. Unfortunately, this record label also signed several other well-known people in the beginning. Avril Lavigne’s contract with Atlantic Records ended after a couple of albums, which led her to begin working with her own record label, Sire Records.
Her two-year contract with Atlantic was soon renewed by the company, making it possible for her to record her own album and begin her first world tour. At this point, however, problems arose with the band’s bass player, who was leaving the band. Instead of letting go of the bass guitar player, Avril Lavigne hired Jannick Diplo to replace him. Although Avril Lavigne did not reach number two in the charts with Weezer again, her second album, Welcome didn’t even reach number one.
