Amy Carlson is a versatile entertainer who has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, most notably as an FBI agent in the award-winning movie World in Motion. She is also well known as a judge on The Best Friends of Men and was the voice of Aunt Helen in the animated film Finding Nemo. Carlson has also appeared in several episodes of Law and Order: SVU.
Born in segregated Mississippi during the mid-twentieth century, Amy Carlson grew up in Illinois, where her parents separated when she was young. Her childhood home was destroyed in a tornado during an extended thunderstorm. Her family moved to New Orleans following the civil war. Carlson had a chance to work on The Harry Potter television series, so she experienced firsthand how life changing that was. After moving back to Los Angeles, Carlson settled in Chicago, where she appeared in some early movies, including Rosemary Clooney’s Love, Alias and The Perfect Score. Eventually, she landed small parts in television shows such as ER and Seinfeld.
Following the break up of her marriage to George Clooney in 1996, Amy Carlson received several honors for her performances in independent films and movies such as Swing Vote. She also was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in The Game. During the late nineties, Carlson appeared in some popular movies, including Everybody Loves Raymond and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
Aftr her marriage to George Clooney in 1996, Amy returned to Los Angeles to spend time with her daughter. According to reports, Amy felt that she had become too “famous” and felt like she had achieved too much. She was plagued by bouts of depression and even considered quitting acting altogether. Her daughter insisted on seeing her mother. Amy was not prepared to face the public’s rejection of her again. On July 14th, after a lengthy illness, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and given a day’s treatment and the news was devastating.
Amy had a luminescent career, spanning over half of her 52 years. Her roles in both Hollywood films and TV shows were popular and enduring. Carl Parks, her husband, said of Amy, “There isn’t anyone that’s been with her longer than I have. She’s just a beautiful lady.”
Amy was nominated for an Academy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role as the cynical and manipulative FBI agent, Dana Scully in the movie The Butterfly Effect. Her co-stars included Patrick Swayze, Meryl Streep, Denholm Elliott and Keith Urban. She also guest-starred on several other popular and successful television shows including ER, Frasier, Seinfeld and Friends. These credits earned Amy a number of awards and honors including Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Drama and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her contribution to the series, Herself.
In 2021, Amy Carlson went on to play the lead role in a new spin-off of the successful FX show The Shield, entitled No Ordinary Family. This time out of Hollywood, Carlson was replaced by Victoriaakis in the lead role of a divorced father and ex-cop named David Kleinfeld. She had a hand in the creation of this popular spin-off, which was a critical and commercial hit for FX. She also made guest appearances on several other popular and successful television shows including Sex and the City and Weeds. She is currently on stage in the world of theater, playing opposite Matt Damon in the upcoming film All I Really Need is More.
