Though her term as prime minister ended just before the onset of the Gulf War, her government managed to hold together a united front through the war. Her success in steering the country through the trauma of the war marked her first and only term as prime minister. The next phase in her public life came with the introduction of the proportional representation system and end to direct election of members of the lower house of the Dutch parliament.

Katja Herbers’ early life also included a spell at the Royal Academy of St. Petersburg in Russia, where she honed her craft as an opera singer. She gained international prominence in her performance as the principal singer of the accompaniment in Die Felsch (The Secret History) which was critically acclaimed in London and considered one of the greatest ballets ever put to film. She later appeared in Handel’s Amusement Park (1932) and in Achilles (1933), both of which were also critically acclaimed. Although Katja Herbers never attained the status of a leading European opera singer, her popularity throughout Europe resulted in her being invited to perform at the Grande Ball acoustically established by Queen Maria of Spain at the Teatre Royal in Paris.

As a character artiste in the television series Manhattan, Katja Herbers once again displayed her skill as an accomplished and charming oboist, playing opposite Hugh Jackman in the role of Martin “Red” Roth. This part was especially memorable for many because it was the first time that an American actor would portray an oboe in a major Hollywood film. Red is currently the most popular oboist in the world, although there are a number of talented performers who could replace him if the times, or Hollywood, changed again.
