Stevie Wonder is a former R&B singer, songwriter and record producer. Known more popularly as a recording artist during the mid to late 20th century, he has also released music while incarcerated. Legend has it that he was locked up in a Texas prison because of his association with the Black Panther Party and other revolutionary groups. His imprisonment did not seem to affect his music career, although some of his lyrics were used by the Black Pistons while they were incarcerated.

In January of this year Stevie Wonder performed his first ever solo concert in Washington D.C. During his performance Stevie Wonder performed several new songs as well as remade and mixed previously unheard material. Prior to his concert he had released a number of singles that included, “Elvir”, “Give Me The Reason”, and “Prophetic”. A new album called Wonderful Tonight was issued in March by independent record label Amicorum Recordings. The album contained twelve new singles including Stevie’s first song to feature female vocals, “Give Me The Reason”.

During the concert, Stevie Wonder performed a number-one hit” Stevie Wonder” which was followed by a cover of Aretha Franklin’s classic song “White Room”. This version of the original song featured two backup dancers dressed in white face paint and made famous by Madonna and Elvis. Another popular single that features a white dancer, this time by the name of Ashanti, was also recorded by Stevie and featured on the first album from his independent musical career titled Wonderful Tonight. An interesting fact about both these singles is that neither has released a number-one hit.

Stevie Wonder’s other hits also included songs which reached the pop charts such as Wonderful Tonight and Give Me The Reason, which reached the top ten in the United Kingdom. When “Stevie Wonder” was finally taken from the UK chart at number-two, it marked the beginning of what would become a legendary decade for Stevie Wonder and his band. His first album featuring the band, Steely Dan’s One, was later made available in the U.S. The band’s second album, Afternoon of One, was another sold-out gold record in the U.S. No matter where the band went, their hits just wouldn’t go out of style. Stevie Wonder’s peers in the pop world have also done extensive research and have cataloged their own personal hits in the pop music genre, noting the influence of Stevie Wonder as they wrote their own popular songs.

A notable Stevie Wonder fan is Barbra Streisand, who sang one of her many hits with the band, Everything or Whatever. Barbra has said that she got inspired by Stevie’s early singles, including the song” Higher Ground.” According to an interview with Time Magazine, Streisand feels like Stevie Wonder is the template for successful pop singers: “If you can open your heart and see the world through other people’s eyes, you can create a magic that people can’t resist…. Stevie Wonder’s songs touch a chord within each of us that says, ‘This is not just a song; this is our life!’ ” Barbra Streisand is now married to Will Smith and has two children.

Many artists have successfully held their own against superstars when they were singing about similar topics, but what separates Stevie Wonder from the rest of his contemporaries? As previously mentioned, he has written many songs about love, family, growing up, issues of life and death, racing, growing up as an artist and more. It is likely that as long as he continues to perform his hits, his popularity will never decline. No other artist has created such a unique and successful catalog of songs in the key of life.
