Ibtissam was known to be an avid lover of music, and also studied music theory and composition. He went on to form his own band, which he called “Algeria,” and this group’s concerts are widely reported to have been the inspiration for many modern pop songs. During the second season of the hit reality series of the same name, Ibtisam Tiskat was nominated twice for a total of eleven times. She ultimately lost out on her first nomination, but was still able to squeak by her opponents in the next two episodes. The other nominee was Kamal Amrohi, who became the first Muslim woman to win a major beauty pageant. Ibtissam Tiskat came in a close second to Kamal, so it was pretty impressive for an African-American to come in first place in something as major as a competition show.
In the following episodes, she remained a firm favorite and was nominated once for the third consecutive time. It was at this point that a controversy was sparked when it was discovered that Ibtissam Tiskat had voted herself into the contest. This revelation eliminated her from the running for a chance at a higher vote and raised suspicions from judges and producers. At first, they defended their decision saying that she had been a viable contender due to her previous performance on the show.
Tipped off by a former contestant who alleged that Ibtissam was purposely excluded from the competition, the controversy grew even larger. A recording was then leaked that contained audio of the interaction between Ibtissam Tiskat and one of the judges. In the recording, Ibtissam can be heard complaining about how she was not chosen as the best male ever. At that point, the rumors began to spread and continued to grow until the whole thing became a big talking point on the media. With all the controversy surrounding Ibtissam’s win and with the exclusion of her fellow Arabic singer from the competition, how can you still consider her one of the best male vocals of the year?
