John’s father worked as a surveyor and botanist in Scotland, so John always remained close to the land. It was a family home in Edinburgh, built by his great-grandfather on the south side of the river dyke that really inspired the actor. The area was named John Barrowman House after John’s father. It now houses the John Barrowman Trust, which has helped fund many research projects to preserve the world’s remaining wilderness areas.
John Barrowman, like many performers from his generation, achieved great success in spite of his own challenges and is very humble about the impact his father made on his life. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, but lost to Gene Hackman for his role in Mystic River. The award for best supporting actor went to Ben Stiller for Big and was later won by Bill Murray for Rainmaker.
